Understanding Breast Lift Surgery
A breast lift, or mastopexy, removes excess skin and reshapes existing breast tissue. It may be considered when breast shape or nipple position has changed following pregnancy, weight change or ageing. A lift does not reliably increase breast volume or prevent future changes. Choosing no operation is also an option.
Assessment and surgical options
Assessment considers breast size, skin quality, nipple position, asymmetry, medical history and your reasons for seeking surgery. A breast lift and a breast reduction serve different purposes: reduction also removes breast tissue to reduce size. An implant may add volume, but introduces additional long-term risks and follow-up. A lift with implants may be performed together or in stages when clinically appropriate.
Scar patterns depend on the degree of reshaping. They may extend around the areola, vertically down the breast and along the breast crease. Scars are permanent and can widen or become raised. No specific breast shape, size or symmetry can be promised.
Risks and limitations of mastopexy
Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, wound breakdown, visible scars, asymmetry, changes in nipple or breast sensation, and further surgery. Nipple or skin blood supply can be affected, occasionally causing tissue loss. Breastfeeding may be affected. Blood clots and anaesthetic complications are additional risks. Smoking and certain medical conditions increase the risk of healing problems.
Recovery and follow-up
You will receive instructions about wound care, support garments, pain relief and activity. Arrange help at home and discuss time away from work, driving, lifting and exercise. These decisions depend on the operation and your progress. Swelling and scars continue to change over time; pregnancy and weight changes may alter the result.
Breast lift consultation and costs in Perth
Bring details of previous breast surgery, implants, medications and relevant breast imaging. Assessment determines whether imaging or further review is needed. Costs depend on the surgical plan, hospital and anaesthetic care. Medicare and private insurance eligibility must be assessed against current criteria; a rebate should not be assumed.
