Trigger thumb occurs when the thumb becomes locked in a bent position, often due to a thickened flexor tendon. In early cases, splinting or corticosteroid injections may help, but persistent trigger thumb may require surgical release to restore smooth movement. Other fingers may also be affected.

Ganglion cysts and other hand cysts are benign fluid-filled lumps that commonly develop on the wrist, fingers, or palm. While some resolve on their own, others may cause pain or restricted movement. Surgical options include removal of the cyst if it is persistent or symptomatic.

Dupuytren’s disease causes thickened tissue in the palm, leading to finger contractures that make it difficult to fully open the hand. It is a benign fibroproliferative disorder often with a family history- strong Anglo-Saxon heritage. Depending on the severity, surgical fasciectomy is performed for more severe contractures with occasion zig-zag incisions (Z plasties to minimise contractures) to improve hand function and mobility.

Nerve compression conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome (median nerve compression at the wrist) and cubital tunnel syndrome (ulnar nerve compression at the elbow) can cause numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hands and fingers. Early management includes splinting, activity modification, and injections, but surgical nerve decompression may be required if symptoms persist.

Nerve injuries from trauma or compression can lead to loss of sensation, weakness, or pain. Surgical options include nerve repair, grafting, or decompression to restore function and sensation. Early intervention is key to maximising recovery.
