Assessment of Dupuytren’s Contracture

Dupuytren’s disease affects tissue beneath the skin of the palm and fingers. Nodules and cords may develop, and some fingers gradually become difficult to straighten. Not every nodule needs surgery. Treatment decisions depend on progression, joint involvement, function and your priorities.

Assessment and timing

Assessment includes the degree of contracture, affected joints, skin quality, previous treatment and impact on daily tasks. Observation may be appropriate when function is not significantly affected. Treatment is considered when the benefits justify its risks. A longstanding joint contracture may not fully straighten even when a cord is treated.

Treatment options

Selected cords may be treated by needle release, while other patterns need removal of affected tissue through surgery. In recurrent or more extensive disease, additional skin treatment may be considered. These approaches have different recovery needs and recurrence risks. The suitable option depends on the individual findings rather than a universal preferred technique.

Recurrence and surgical risks

Treatment can address contracture but does not cure the underlying tendency to develop Dupuytren’s disease. Cords and contractures may recur or develop elsewhere. Risks include bleeding, infection, delayed healing, scars, stiffness, altered sensation, injury to nerves or blood vessels and reduced finger circulation. Prolonged pain or reduced hand function and further surgery are also possible. Complete straightening cannot be guaranteed.

Hand therapy and recovery

Wound care, exercises, selected splinting and hand therapy may be part of recovery. Your team will guide safe movement and return to work, driving and gripping tasks. The extent of surgery, previous treatment and joint stiffness influence recovery. Follow-up is needed to monitor healing and function and to discuss any recurrent concerns.
