Understanding Trigger Finger
Trigger finger occurs when a flexor tendon does not glide freely through its sheath, often near the base of the finger. It can cause clicking, pain or locking. Trigger thumb is a related problem. This page concerns adult treatment; children with a trigger thumb need a separate paediatric assessment.
Assessment and alternatives
Consultation considers the affected digit, duration, locking, stiffness, previous treatment and conditions such as diabetes. Other causes of hand pain or reduced movement need to be considered. Depending on the circumstances, options may include observation, activity changes, a splint or a corticosteroid injection. Persistent locking or symptoms that have not responded to appropriate treatment may lead to discussion of surgery.
Trigger finger release
Release surgery opens the constricting pulley to allow the tendon to glide more freely. The approach and anaesthetic depend on the individual plan. Surgery aims to reduce triggering; it does not guarantee that a finger with longstanding stiffness will immediately regain full movement. Treating several affected fingers or other hand conditions may require a different plan.
Risks and limitations
Risks include bleeding, infection, scars, nerve injury, altered sensation, persistent pain, stiffness, incomplete symptom relief and further surgery. Damage to other supporting pulleys can affect tendon position and finger movement. Some people have prolonged pain and reduced hand function. Discuss the expected benefit and personal risks before consenting.
Recovery and rehabilitation
Follow your team’s advice about wound care, finger movement and activity. Hand therapy may be needed if stiffness persists. Returning to work, driving, gripping and manual tasks depends on the affected hand, occupation and healing. The wound and finger movement may improve at different rates; follow-up helps identify ongoing problems.
