Melanoma Surgery

A diagnostic excisional biopsy is often the first step in melanoma management, where the lesion is completely removed and sent for pathology to confirm the diagnosis and assess depth. If melanoma is detected, a definitive wide local excision is performed, removing a margin of healthy skin around the tumour to reduce the risk of recurrence.

For melanomas with a risk of spreading beyond the skin, a sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) may be recommended to assess whether cancer has reached the lymphatic system. If melanoma is found in the lymph nodes, a lymph node dissection may be considered as part of a broader treatment plan or immunotherapy as discussed at the WAKMAS meetings.
