Facial Surgery Assessment and Options

Facial plastic surgery requires an individual assessment of anatomy, health, symptoms and expectations. Dr Raj Zaman, Specialist Plastic Surgeon, provides consultations in Murdoch, Joondalup and Bunbury. Treatment may be appropriate for selected concerns involving upper eyelid skin. No surgery is also a valid option.

Upper blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery removes selected excess skin and sometimes adjusts other tissue. Assessment distinguishes skin excess from a low eyebrow or drooping eyelid margin, which may require a different approach. Dry eye, eye disease and previous surgery affect suitability. An eye specialist opinion may be needed.

Assessment, alternatives and limitations

Consultation includes your reasons for treatment, medical history, medications, smoking, eye symptoms and earlier facial procedures. Depending on the concern, alternatives may include observation or other medical care. Surgical and non-surgical treatments have different limitations and risks. Surgery should not be presented as a way to guarantee confidence, relationships or wellbeing.

Risks and recovery

All surgery has risks, including bleeding, infection, permanent scars, wound healing problems, altered sensation, asymmetry and further surgery. Eyelid surgery can affect eye comfort, eyelid closure and vision; serious complications require urgent assessment. The proposed operation needs a detailed discussion of its specific risks.

Bruising, swelling, discomfort and activity restrictions vary. Plan follow-up and support at home, and discuss work, driving and exercise with your treating team. Results and scars change over time and cannot be guaranteed.
