Considering Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty, sometimes called a tummy tuck, removes excess abdominal skin and selected fat. Abdominal wall tightening may be considered when clinically appropriate. It is a substantial operation and is not a weight-loss treatment. It cannot remove every stretch mark or guarantee a flat abdomen.

Individual assessment

Assessment includes skin excess, fat distribution, previous abdominal surgery, possible hernia, abdominal wall separation, health, smoking and weight stability. Planning further pregnancy or weight loss may affect timing. Abdominal symptoms can have other causes and should be assessed before attributing them to skin or muscle separation.

Choosing the extent of surgery

A standard abdominoplasty usually leaves a low abdominal scar and may include a scar around the umbilicus. A limited procedure does not address all upper abdominal skin. Fleur-de-lis surgery adds a vertical scar for selected patterns of excess skin, while circumferential surgery extends around the trunk. Liposuction treats fat rather than removing significant loose skin. The extent and possible staging depend on anatomy and risk.

Risks and limitations

Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collections, wound breakdown, skin or fat tissue loss, prominent scars, persistent numbness, asymmetry and further surgery. Blood clots in the legs or lungs and anaesthetic complications can be serious. Smoking, nutritional deficiencies and certain medical conditions increase healing risks.

Recovery and practical preparation

Arrange help with daily activities and discuss work, driving, lifting and exercise before surgery. Dressings, drains and support garments may be used. Follow the team’s individual instructions for walking, wound care and activity progression. Swelling and scars take time to settle. Follow-up is needed to identify problems and assess healing; do not rely on a fixed recovery promise.
