Understanding 360 Belt Lipectomy

A belt lipectomy, sometimes described as a circumferential or 360 lower body lift, removes selected excess skin and tissue around the waist and lower trunk. It may be considered after substantial weight loss when skin excess extends beyond the front of the abdomen. It is not a weight-loss treatment and does not treat every area of loose skin.

Extent of treatment and scars

The operation extends around the trunk and leaves a long permanent scar. It can address selected abdominal, flank and lower back skin; the effect on the buttocks and upper outer thighs depends on the plan. Inner thighs, arms and breasts may need separate treatment. “360” describes the circumferential approach and does not mean that all body concerns can be corrected in one operation.

Assessment and staging

Assessment includes the distribution of skin excess, previous abdominal surgery, nutritional status, stable weight, smoking and medical conditions. An abdominal-only operation, staged procedures or choosing no surgery may be more appropriate. Combining several operations can increase their duration and risks. Discuss scar location, untreated areas and practical support before consent.

Risks and limitations

Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collections, wound breakdown, skin or fat tissue loss, prominent scars, altered sensation, asymmetry and further surgery. Blood clots in the legs or lungs and anaesthetic complications can be serious. Long wounds and tension can lead to prolonged wound care. Poor nutrition, smoking and certain health conditions increase risk.

Recovery and follow-up

Plan help at home and discuss work, travel, driving, lifting and exercise. Dressings, drains, garments and activity restrictions depend on the operation. Your team will explain early walking and follow-up. Recovery should be guided by healing rather than a fixed deadline. Swelling and scars change over time, and further surgery may be required for complications or remaining concerns.
