Planning Surgery After Weight Loss
Following substantial weight loss, excess skin may remain around the abdomen, lower trunk, arms, thighs or breasts. Body contouring removes selected skin and tissue; it does not replace weight management or prevent future weight changes. Some people choose no operation or seek advice for skin care and physical symptoms instead.
Assessment before skin-removal surgery
Assessment considers weight stability, the pattern of skin excess, previous bariatric treatment, nutrition, anaemia, smoking, medications and medical conditions. Bring details of weight changes and previous operations. Nutritional deficiencies and other health issues may need attention before surgery can be considered. Skin irritation and physical symptoms should be assessed on their own merits.
Procedure options and priorities
Options can include standard or fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty, a circumferential belt lipectomy, an arm lift, a thigh lift or breast reshaping. Each treats different areas and leaves permanent scars. An operation on the abdomen does not remove excess skin from the arms or thighs. Consultation helps compare what each option can address and what it may leave untreated.
Why treatment may be staged
Treating several areas together can create longer operations and more extensive wounds. A staged plan may allow recovery between procedures. The sequence depends on clinical priorities, health and practical support; there is no single plan appropriate for everyone.
Risks and recovery
Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, wound breakdown, tissue loss, prominent scars, altered sensation, contour differences and additional surgery. Blood clots and anaesthetic complications can be serious. Healing problems may need prolonged wound care. Arrange assistance at home and discuss time away from work, lifting, driving and travel. Follow-up, nutrition and individual activity instructions remain important throughout recovery.
