Considering an Arm Lift

Brachioplasty, or arm lift surgery, removes excess skin and selected fat from the upper arm. It may be considered after weight loss or other changes in skin elasticity. It is not a weight-loss operation. Exercise may improve strength but does not reliably remove significant excess skin.

Assessment and alternatives

Assessment includes the amount and position of excess skin, fat distribution, weight stability, previous treatment, smoking and health. Liposuction may be considered for selected fat deposits when skin elasticity is suitable, but it does not remove significant loose skin. A limited incision is not suitable for all patterns of skin excess. Choosing no operation remains an option.

Arm lift scars and extent

The scar may extend along the inner or back aspect of the arm toward the elbow. More extensive skin removal may involve the underarm or adjacent chest region. The exact pattern depends on anatomy and the plan. Scars are permanent and may be noticeable, widened, raised or tender. A specific arm contour or symmetrical result cannot be guaranteed.

Risks of brachioplasty

Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, delayed healing, wound separation, prominent scars, altered sensation, persistent pain, contour differences and further surgery. Injury to deeper nerves, blood vessels or lymphatic tissues may occur. Anaesthetic complications and blood clots are additional risks. Smoking and certain medical conditions increase healing risks.

Recovery and arm movement

Your team will explain dressings, any support garment, wound care and how to progress arm movement. Arrange help for lifting, household tasks and childcare. Time away from work, driving and exercise depends on the extent of treatment and your healing. Swelling and scar appearance can change for months, and some problems need longer treatment.
