Considering Breast Implant Removal
Breast implant removal, or explant surgery, may be considered for rupture, capsule hardening, pain, implant-associated concerns or a decision to no longer have implants. The reason for removal affects investigations and the surgical plan. Some symptoms have other possible causes and need medical assessment before a decision.
Assessment before explant surgery
Bring your implant card, previous operation reports and relevant imaging. Assessment considers the implant type and age, breast tissue, capsule, symptoms and health. Ultrasound or other investigations may be needed. New swelling, a breast mass or a persistent change around an implant warrants prompt medical assessment.
Capsule surgery and breast shape
Removal of some or all of the capsule is considered individually. It is not automatically necessary for every implant removal and can add risks when the capsule is attached to surrounding structures. The term “en bloc” should not be treated as a routine requirement. Suspected implant-associated cancer requires a specific specialist assessment and plan.
Breast volume and shape may change after removal. Options can include removal alone, a lift, or staged reshaping; another implant is not obligatory. Loose skin, asymmetry or depressions may remain. No particular appearance can be guaranteed.
Risks and symptom limitations
Risks include bleeding, infection, fluid collection, altered sensation, scars, contour differences and further surgery. Capsule surgery may injure surrounding tissue, including the chest wall. Anaesthetic complications and blood clots are also possible. Removal cannot guarantee improvement in systemic symptoms attributed to implants; investigate other causes with your treating doctors.
Recovery and follow-up
Wound care, drains, support garments and activity restrictions depend on the operation. Plan help at home and discuss work, lifting, driving and exercise. Your team will explain follow-up and any pathology results. Decisions about later breast reshaping may be deferred until healing is assessed.
